Mars Announces Expansion in Fort Smith, Arkansas
On December 14, 2016, Mars Petcare announced a $72 million investment to expand its facility in Fort Smith, AR with a potential investment up to $110 million and creation of 130 new jobs over the next few years.
"Since the site was built, the City of Fort Smith and State of Arkansas have been tremendously supportive of our investments and business," said Mark Johnson, President of Mars Petcare US. "Their support and the high quality Northwest Arkansas workforce has enabled our continued growth – ensuring we can continue to feed more pets."
The announcement was held at the facility with the assistance of the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce and hosted both community leaders and elected officials. Attendees included Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, Congressman Steve Womack, State Representative Charlotte Douglas, a member of State Senator Terry Rice’s staff, the Arkansas Economic Development Executive Director Mike Preston, and Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders.
Governor Hutchinson expressed, both at the announcement and at his 2017 State of the State speech, how Mars Petcare in Fort Smith is an example of companies locating and expanding in Arkansas, demonstrating how the state is creating jobs and growing its economy. "Mars Petcare's decision to expand this facility speaks highly of the company's existing workforce in Fort Smith," said Governor Asa Hutchinson. "This is a very significant investment that will impact not only the local economy but that of the state. Thanks to the leadership of Mars Petcare for choosing to grow in Arkansas and the Associates who make it such a great place to work."
